SmartReply system writes out the answers that YouTubers might want to reply to the comments they receive. Google is planning to roll out its SmartReply technology to YouTube which means the comments you are going to see on the platform may not have been written by a human.
The SmartReply system first analyzes received comments and then leverages AI to guess what a human may say in response to those messages. Users can post those responses without the need to write anything by themselves.
You have already experienced this technology in Gmail and Android Messages app and as developers, you can integrate it within your app.
Now, the technology is coming to YouTube which is the most public place where the messages written by the AI software can ever be seen.
How SmartReply Works?
For instance, if a viewer comments on a video asking when he or she can expect more videos from the channel, the SmartReply software may suggest the creator to reply “The launch date for next video is in September”. The creator can then post the same and the person who commented will receive the notification saying he got a response for his comment, without knowing that it was written by software.
Rolling out AI to YouTube posed a challenge for Google because of the nature of the comments that get posted on the site. Unlike formal language seen on email, YouTube comments comprise of slang, abbreviated words, heavy use of emojis, language switching, and irregular use of punctuation.
But it was finally decided to release it to YouTube users as creators more often receive a large volume of responses in the form of comments to their videos. SmartReply software can be used to allow the creators to easily stay in touch with their audience.
The SmartReply technology will not post the messages but will guess and write them down. The replies suggested by the AI will be chosen by a human from the various options presented by the software. The software also allows YouTube creators to edit and add to the message as per their choice. As per YouTube, the software doesn’t offer suggestions unnecessarily.
