Mediator AI helping Humans Communicate During a Pandemic

AI can act as a mediator with its smart replies that helps humans to communicate during a pandemic.

During a pandemic, daily life comprises of social distancing and finding new ways to connect remotely with family, friends, and colleagues. According to New Cornell University, Artificial Intelligence can play a role in keeping our communications on track, as we communicate by text and online,

As per a new study, people having tough conversations said they could trust AI systems with the smart reply suggestions in texts more than the humans they were talking to. Jess Hohenstein, one of the researchers involved in the study felt that when things go wrong, humans take the responsibility that would otherwise be delegated to their partner and pass some of that to the AI system. Hence there is a potential for AI to act as a mediator in our conversations.

The algorithm for instance can notice certain things that are going downhill from the language used and then suggest strategies for conflict resolution.

The study was aimed at exploring a myriad of ways comprising of both significant and subtle where AI systems can be used like smart replies that can alter the way humans interact. The researchers said that by selecting a suggested reply that is not quite what you wanted to say but saves you typing can fundamentally change the course of your conversations and thereby your relationships.

Communication is fundamental to the way we form perceptions about each other, the way we form and maintain relationships, or the way we accomplish anything by working together. This study comes under the border agenda of perceiving how these new Artificial Intelligence systems interfere with our ability to interact. More often we think about the way the design of systems affects the way we interact with them but only fewer studies focus on the way these technologies will affect the way humans interact with each other.

The study in addition to shedding light on the way humans perceive and interact with computers also offers possibilities for enhancing human communication with reminders and subtle guidance from AI.

AI for Moral Responsibility

Researchers sought to explore whether AI can function as a “moral crumple zone” which is the technological equivalent of a car’s crumple zone that is designed to deform to absorb the impact of a crash. A physical mechanism is involved in the front of the car that is designed to absorb the impact created by the force and minimizes the crash effects. Similarly, here we can see the AI systems absorbing some of the moral responsibility.
