Facial Recognition leverages technology to identify a human face. One can define it as a software that helps to detect a person from his or her facial contours that are unique to that person either by comparing it with a database or by identifying patterns. In most cases, facial recognition analyzes the unique facial features, compares them with a database, and identifies the person.

How Facial Recognition Systems Work?

Facial Recognition algorithms are trained used deep neural networks and are fed with a large database of images with faces in known positions.

Detection

The camera will spot and identify a face from images or videos, either in a crowd or alone. The facial recognition algorithm has high chances of spotting a face when the person is looking straight.

Analysis

The algorithm identifies 80 nodal points on the human face by reading the geometry of the face. These nodal points are used to spot the unique and specific details of a person’s face from length & width of the nose to the distance between the eyes, depth of eye sockets, and the shape of chin and cheekbones among others.

Data Conversion

From the analysis, the algorithm detects the person’s faceprint which is sort of a mathematical formula. This formula is unique to every person similar to each person having a unique fingerprint.

Matching

The facial recognition algorithm then runs the person’s faceprint against a face recognition database and using a preset threshold, looks for matches. These matches are then ranked and displayed.

Common Applications of Facial Recognition Technology

This technology has already been leveraged in many ways in recent years. From tech firms to law enforcement agencies, everyone has tried to make the best of this technology. Facial recognition technology has assisted law enforcement agencies to detect the perpetrators of crime. People have come across this technology in one way or another in their daily lives. Be it tagging photos on Facebook or apps released by Google, Microsoft & Apple have leveraged this technology for compiling albums for people who hang out together.

Below are some of the existing applications of Facial Recognition Technology;

Effective Surveillance with Facial Recognition

In the security sector, the main application of facial recognition technology is to detect unauthorized access by non-authorized personnel to restricted areas. This technology is integrated into IP cameras that are then used for the surveillance of restricted areas. For detecting threats and spotting any intrusion, these cameras are fed with blacklists and whitelists for certain areas and are equipped with perimeter and asset monitoring capabilities.

Fleet Management

Fleet managers can now remotely monitor their drivers and with accuracy, thanks to Facial Recognition. A camera installed inside vehicles helps to identify the driver and assign work as per their shift hours. It helps to prevent theft when an unauthorized person tries to enter the vehicle by sending alerts immediately to the manager.

Smarter Border Control

Facial Recognition has been used for smarter border control helping to identify illegal immigrants and criminals. INTERPOL owns a Face Recognition System that is well supported by a facial image database with data from 160 countries which makes it one of the unique global criminal databases. This database has been synced with border controls to accurately identify the criminals.
